Una lluvia torrencial cubre con su manto grisáceo una enorme y sobrepoblada ciudad, en donde aparece el cuerpo de la primera víctima de lo que parece ser una compleja y cruel serie de crímenes. Donde los detectives Mills y Somerset, tendrán que usar cada recurso con el que cuentan para resolver ese complicado rompecabezas. Corría el año de 1995 cuando la película Seven, dirigida por David Fincher, sorprendía por primera vez a las audiencias en las salas de cine con esa prometedora premisa.

El detective veterano Somerset se encuentra casi al final de una larga carrera de sinsabores en la policía metropolitana de una ciudad sin nombre. Donde ha sido testigo de las peores acciones que puede hacer un ser humano. Cuando le es asignado como compañero un joven y optimista detective llamado Mills. Quien está listo de dar todo lo que tiene por cumplir con su deber como policía.
“Ese es el conflicto que quise establecer. El personaje de Morgan (Freeman) es impulsado constantemente en cada escena y quedarse a pelear la buena pelea. La cual está cansado de pelear y por la que no siente que está haciendo una diferencia o irse y rendirse. Por otro lado Mills es más unilateral, lo cual es: Sí claro, vamos a pelear, puedo hacer una gran diferencia” dijo el escritor del guión Andrew Kevin Walker durante el Austin Film Festival en su edición del 2016.
El patrón que siguen los asesinatos son los 7 pecados capitales en donde cada una de las víctimas sufrirán un terrible final a manos de un criminal, cuyo retorcido significado de justicia se ve impulsado e inspirado por los castigos que se plasman en las páginas de la literatura medieval como la Divina Comedia del poeta italiano Dante Alighieri. Y que obligará a los detectives encargados de la investigación a sumergirse en su lectura profunda para entender las motivaciones del asesino.
“Es en paralelo, exactamente lo que yo estaba haciendo y en realizar la investigación para el guión. Estaba leyendo las Cliff Notes de Chaucer y la investigación de la Enciclopedia Benet´s Readers sobre Santo Tomás de Aquino. El pilar de los pecados era literalmente de la edición de bolsillo de Penguin” relató Andrew Kevin Walker durante el Austin Film Festival en el 2016.
El resultado final es una de los mejores thrillers de la historia del cine. Cuyo impresionante final sigue siendo inspiración para las futuras generaciones de cineastas y que fue capaz de impactar a toda una década. Seven es un clásico cinematográfico cuya fuerza atemporal es capaz de sorprender a quienes busquen un relato de misterio detallado y emocionante. Una opción indispensable para estas fechas festivas de Día de Brujas.
