Hugo Gutiérrez Vega (1934-2015), estudió Derecho en la Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM), Letras Inglesas en Michigan, Letras Italianas en la Universidad de Roma y Sociología de la Comunicación en Londres. Fue consejero cultural en Roma, Londres, Madrid y Washington. Le fue otorgado el grado de doctor honoris causa por la Universidad Autónoma de Querétaro. Su vasta obra poética comprende 30 libros publicados.
Se desempeñó como profesor en la Universidad Autónoma de Querétaro y en las facultades de Filosofía y Letras y de Ciencias Políticas y Sociales de la UNAM. Ocupó el cargo de rector de la Universidad Autónoma de Querétaro. Fue gran promotor de la cultura, maestro visitante y conferencista en más de diez países. Dirigió La Casa del Lago, fue director general de Difusión Cultural de la UNAM y director de la Revista de la Universidad. Organiza es el primer director de los Cómicos de la Lengua de la Universidad Autónoma de Querétaro, así como del Grupo de Teatro Latinoamericano de Roma, además de haberse desempeñado como actor en las compañías de teatro de la UNAM. Fue miembros del Seminario de Cultura Mexicana y correspondiente de la Academia Puertorriqueña de la Lengua Española.
En su juventud Hugo Gutiérrez Vega ganó un concurso gracias al libro de poemas que, alguna vez aceptó, tenían una fuerte influencia de Rafael Alberti, quien figuró en su vida no sólo como un autor al que leyó profundamente, sino como un amigo que lo encaminó en la senda de la poesía, al mostrársela desde diferentes perspectivas para conocerla ampliamente. Gutiérrez Vega vio en él a un maestro y lo llegó a reconocer como un hermano mayor.
El primer libro de Gutiérrez Vega fue Buscado amor, publicado por Editorial Losada de Buenos Aires en 1965 y en éste, el entonces joven autor no oculta la relación estrecha con la obra de Salvador Novo; incluso, desde el título ya se nota un guiño hacia el Nuevo amor del escritor perteneciente al grupo de los Contemporáneos. La propuesta de la ópera prima de Hugo Gutiérrez Vega se dirigió al ofrecimiento de una poesía completamente transparente, la cual fue una característica de todo su trabajo.
A lo largo de 50 años de trayectoria profesional, Gutiérrez Vega escribió una obra vasta que, aunque es más reconocida en el área de la poesía, también incluyó importantes ensayos sobre diversos temas que le interesaron, como por ejemplo el teatro en México, la obra cinematográfica del director Luis Buñuel, la poesía italiana moderna, la de José Carlos Becerra, así como la de Ramón López Velarde.
Los viajes fueron una constante en la vida de Hugo Gutiérrez Vega. Algunos de sus poemarios, dan cuenta de ello: Desde Inglaterra (1971), Samarcanda y otros poemas (1972), Meridiano ocho–cero(1982), Andar en Brasil (1987), Georgetown blues y otros poemas (1987), El nombre oculto de Grecia (1991), entre algunos tantos.
Gutiérrez Vega fue miembro de carrera del Servicio Exterior Mexicano desde 1963, por lo que fue consejero cultural en las embajadas de México en Italia, Gran Bretaña, España y Washington. En Brasil y Puerto Rico estuvo a cargo del consulado de México y como embajador en Grecia, así como concurrente en Líbano, Chipre, Rumania y Moldova. También realizó trabajos especiales para la UNESCO en Irán y la entonces Unión Soviética.
En la década de los años 50, perteneció a la nueva generación de escritores que comenzaban a forjar su propio nombre: Carlos Monsiváis, de quien dijo fue como su hermano; Sergio Pitol, también muy amigo; así como José Emilio Pacheco y Rafael Alberti, su maestro, pero también a quien consideraba como su hermano mayor. Más tarde, también conoció y se relacionó cercanamente con el argentino Juan Gelman.
De todos sus libros, los escritos mientras estuvo en Grecia son los que consideró más entrañables. Pero esos viajes también le dejaron amistades inolvidables, como la de los escritores Pablo Neruda, Miguel Ángel Asturias y el ya mencionado Rafael Alberti. De ellos aprendió aún más a amar a la poesía.
Antología con dudas es el título del libro que recoge los poemas más representativos de su producción poética. Esta obra da un panorama general de su desarrollo, la consideró como su testamento literario, pues en ella puso énfasis alrededor de sus mejores poemas, con lo cual cerró literariamente su vida, pues después de la publicación de este libro, dijo ya no tener más para escribir.
Entre las numerosas distinciones que recibió en el extranjero cabe mencionar, entre otras, en 2010 el Premio y Homenaje Nacional de Periodismo Cultural Fernando Benítez en la Feria Internacional del Libro de Guadalajara. También en el 2010 la Universidad Autónoma de Querétaro creó el Premio de Humanidades Iberoamericano Hugo Gutiérrez Vega. En 2013 recibió el Premio Nacional de Lingüística y Literatura.
