A nivel mundial, una de cada cinco muertes está asociada con alimentación inadecuada, mientras que el 88% de los países padece malnutrición y enfermedades no transmisibles relacionadas con la dieta. A pesar de los numerosos beneficios para la salud asociados con los granos integrales, su consumo es muy bajo, pues a nivel mundial se ingiere menos de una cuarta parte de la recomendación diaria alimenticia.
Una investigación reciente del Fondo Mundial para la Vida Silvestre sugiere cambiar a una “dieta planetaria”, es decir llevar una dieta equilibrada con muchos granos integrales, frutas y verduras, y con muy poco azúcar, aceites, grasas y carne.De esta forma se puede reducir la pérdida de vida silvestre hasta en un 46%, detener la deforestación y reducir las emisiones de gases de efecto invernadero de la agricultura alimentaria en al menos un 30%.
El 19 de noviembre se realizó un seminario virtual auspiciado por la Iniciativa de Granos Integrales (WGI, por sus siglas en inglés), con el lema “Es hora de actuar: los granos integrales son fundamentales en la creación de un sistema alimentario saludable, sostenible y resiliente”.
Patrizia Fracassi, oficial superior de nutrición de la Organización de las Naciones Unidas para la Alimentación y la Agricultura (FAO, por sus siglas en inglés), comentó: “Es importante que actuemos rápidamente. Se ha demostrado que el grano integral tiene una gran cantidad de beneficios para la salud, además de ser mejor para el planeta. Consumir más granos integrales al día se asocia con una reducción del riesgo de mortalidad.Sin embargo, alrededor del 50% de la población mundial no consume una cantidad suficiente de granos integrales.9 Para abordar esta preocupación, recomendamos pautas dietéticas y un etiquetado claro para promover el consumo de granos integrales”.
La WGI, con sede en Viena, es una asociación de expertos y organizaciones dedicadas a promover los granos integrales. Con el apoyo de sus cincuenta miembros, entre ellos el Centro de Investigación en Alimentación y Desarrollo (CIAD), con la representación de la Dra. Alma Rosa Islas Rubio, solicita a los gobiernos que adopten medidas de política pública, lo que ayudará a que las personas comprendan los beneficios de consumir granos integrales.
De manera que la WGI propone las siguientes medidas:
Incluir diario en todas las comidas los granos integrales.
Más de cien países tienen o están desarrollando pautas dietéticas. Se necesita un mayor enfoque en los granos integrales tanto en las directrices como en las imágenes de apoyo o en las guías alimentarias.
Etiquetas claras en los paquetes sobre la contribución de los granos integrales
Las etiquetas del frente de los envases son herramientas eficaces para ayudar a los consumidores a identificar productos alimenticios más saludables;6 la Organización Mundial de la Salud las recomienda para ayudar a prevenir enfermedades no transmisibles.7 Cada vez más países están adoptando las etiquetas del frente de los envases para ayudar a los consumidores a comprender lo que están comiendo. Apoyando este movimiento, la WGI está pidiendo a los gobiernos que incluyan granos integrales en los algoritmos del etiquetado frontal.
Campañas de educación y mercadotecnia sobre los beneficios de los granos integrales.
Una campaña de granos integrales realizada por la asociación danesa de granos integrales y otras organizaciones de salud sin fines de lucro aumentó la ingestión promedio de granos integrales de 32 g a 82 g/10mJ/día después de su ejecución.
