CIUDAD DE MÉXICO.— El mexicano Saúl ‘Canelo’ Álvarez fue nombrado Boxeador del Año tras un exitoso 2019; reconocimiento que se complementa con la designación de Eddy Reynoso, su entrenador, como el Entrenador del año.
La Asociación de Escritores de Boxeo de América (BWAA, por sus siglas en inglés) dio a conocer este viernes sus reconocimientos; por primera vez en sus 94 años de historia, se distingue a dos mexicanos en un mismo año.

De 29 años de edad, ‘Canelo’ Álvarez unificó títulos medianos en mayo de 2019 al vencer en 12 rounds al estadounidense Daniel Jacobs. Seis meses después en su primera aparición en los semicompletos noqueó a Sergey Kovalev para colgarse su cuarto cinturón.
“Este es un gran honor y privilegio, y algo de lo que estoy muy orgulloso de lograr”, aseguró ‘Canelo’ Álvarez en un comunicado. “Es algo que he esperado lograr durante un tiempo. Estoy muy feliz de ser parte de la historia como el segundo mexicano en ganarlo”, agregó.

Es la primera ocasión en su carrera que el tapatío alcanza la distinción del mejor boxeador del año y la primera para un mexicano desde hace 32 años, cuando lo hizo Julio César Chávez en 1987.
Además, el Team Canelo se apuntó una doble victoria. Eddy Reynoso, el responsable de la esquina del ‘Canelo’, se convirtió en el primer mexicano catalogado como el mejor entrenador por la BWAA.
Por primera vez en la historia, la Asociación de Escritores de Boxeo de América (BWAA) designa a dos mexicanos a la vez como peleador y entrenador del año.

‘Canelo’ Álvarez obtuvo el 81 por ciento de los votos de la BWAA. Es el mejor libra por libra de la actualidad de acuerdo a varias clasificaciones mundiales; además, está cerca de anunciar su primer combate a celebrarse el 2 de mayo.
En tanto, Floyd Mayweather fue reconocido con el premio a Boxeador de la Década. Mientras que el premio a Pelea del Año fue para el enfrentamiento entre Inoue y Nonito Donaire en noviembre.
