TULTEPEC, ESTADO DE MÉXICO, 11 de noviembre (AlMomentoMX).- El pasado 6 de noviembre en Tultepec, arqueólogos del Instituto Nacional de Antropología (INAH) hallaron 824 huesos de 14 mamuts, resultando un cambio en los cálculos históricos de los científicos.
El hecho significa el mayor hallazgo de restos de mamuts en México pues se trata de huesos de 15 mil años de antigüedad que se encontraron en trampas, lo que cambia las teorías científicas que señalaban que esta especie era difícilmente cazada.

El arqueólogo Luis Córdoba Barradas, director del área de Salvamento Arqueológico del INAH, estuvo a cargo del rescate de los esqueletos.
En la zona de excavación se recuperaron 8 cráneos, 5 mandíbulas, un centenar de vértebras, 179 costillas de mamut, 11 escápulas, cinco húmeros, pelvis, fémures, tibias y otros huesos pequeños.

El arqueólogo Córdoba informó que podría haber más restos en la zona, ya que se han referido tres lugares con trampas en el municipio de San Antonio Xahuento, lo que indicaría que se trata de una “línea de trampas”.
De acuerdo con el investigador, las trampas prehistóricas de Tultepec fueron excavadas en la arcilla del fondo del Lago de Xaltocan, hace aproximadamente 15 mil años, cuando sus niveles descendieron y dejaron expuestas grandes llanuras.
El fenómeno coincidió con una gran erupción del Popocatépetl, que provocó la movilización de animales y seres humanos hacia el norte de la Cuenca de México, donde la caída de ceniza volcánica fue menor.
Debido a la erupción, en los restos de mamut encontrados se encontraron finas capas de ceniza, así como bentonita (arcilla del lecho lacustre).
Salvador Pulido, director de Salvamento Arqueológico del INAH, declaró que habrá más sondeos arqueológicos en las faldas del Centro de Tultepec, donde debieron estar los campamentos de los cazadores.
Los materiales recuperados se exhibirán en la exposición del Museo del Mamut, ubicado en dicho municipio, y permitirán tratar temas como las enfermedades que aquejaban a estos animales.
