CIUDAD DE MÉXICO; 11 enero 2018.- El temblor de hace unas noches en Honduras despertó las alertas de tsunami en varios países, pero especialmente en las costas de Quintana Roo y levemente en Yucatán. A los pocos minutos de la alerta por el sistema de observación de tsunamis en Estados Unidos, las autoridades mexicanas se dieron a la tarea de levantar la alerta. Sin embargo, afirmaron que no hubo un tsunami; lo que significa que no se elevó el nivel de olas, fura de la norma cotidiana. Sin embargo, la página del gobierno de EU, tsunami.gov, manejó la alerta de que entre 30 centímetros y un metro se elevaría el tamaño de las olas. Turistas y varios lugareños, se dieron cuenta que las playas se replegaron unos 8 metros y despertó el pánico entre la población.
El problema más grave es que no hay una cultura para enfrentar un tsunami en las playas de la península de Yucatán. El retroceso de las playas o la elevación de unos cuantos centímetros implica encender las alertas oportunas. No hay un sistema de monitoreo y de sirenas para alertar y orientar a la población de los sitios seguros. No debemos olvidar que la península se localiza en una zona altamente sísmica, ya que confluyen varias fallas, en lo que se le conoce como la “Placa del Caribe” y que abarca varios países centroamericanos desde Guatemala y Belice, curiosamente con la frontera de Chiapas, hasta la frontera entre Panamá y Colombia, además de afectar países como Jamaica y una pequeña porción de Cuba, a la altura de Santiago.
Un terremoto en esa zona generaría un oleaje peligroso, y en poco tiempo, en nuestras bellas playas quintanarroenses. Ningún gobernador de esa entidad ha puesto atención en la prevención de desgracias. No cuesta, financieramente, mucho. En cambio, la falta de una alerta oportuna, podría provocar muerte y daños materiales incalculables. Carlos Joaquín González, gobernador de Qroo, quien por cierto ayer se reunió con la comunidad libanesa en la Ciudad de México, debería poner especial énfasis en evitar una catástrofe con un tsunami. Salvaría muchas vidas.
